The current version has serious flaws, including:. The ScreenLogic application is not digitally signed by the developer, as strongly recommended by Apple guidelines. As a result, Pentair customers are required to manually bypass Apple's Gatekeeper security features in order to install and run the ScreenLogic application. (Fixed in the new beta): The ScreenLogic application writes data to files in its own internal file structure (inside the ScreenLogic app itself). This also violates Apple guidelines and represents a significant security vulnerability.

As a result, it prevents multiple user accounts from running the ScreenLogic application in /Applications, because of file ownership and file protection issues. (Fixed in the new beta): The ScreenLogic application does not quit normally.

Be aware that SIP offers significant security protections for your Mac and disabling it leaves your Mac more vulnerable to hacker attacks. Apple has made major enhancements to keep the Mac OS safe. To allow only ScreenLogic to pass the GateKeeper: right-click on the application, hold down the shift key and select “open.” This will still keep the GateKeeper active. GateKeeper is built-in to OS X as an assurance mechanism so that users know that a downloaded application was signed by the registered Apple developer, and it has not been hacked, modified, or changed since it was built by that developer. Gatekeeper security features have nothing to do with X11. X11 is a windowing system for Unix (Mac), Linux, and similar operating systems. Applications originally intended for Unix or Linux can ported to run on the Mac with X11.

Wine depends on X11 as well. Let us make it clear that 99% of the Mac applications that Pentair's customers run are written using Apple's Cocoa, not X11. For most users, the ONLY exception is Pentair's ScreenLogic Connect for Mac.- Doesn't that mean something to Pentair or its users?. Right-clicking the ScreenLogic Connect application bypasses the GateKeeper check for that application at first launch and future launches. The user has no way to determine whether the ScreenLogic Connect application is genuine and untouched, or has been hacked (unlikely, but possible).

Sure, it will keep Gatekeeper active for other applications, but not ScreenLogic Connect. The Mac user has already indicated that Gatekeeper checks were bypassed for ScreenLogic Connect. Apple may have made security enhancements to keep the Mac OS (OS X) safe, but Pentair is actively encouraging its users to bypass some of them. Pentair is not doing its part as a good Apple developer citizen. Digitally signed Mac applications (say, from the App Store), check their digital signatures each time the application is run. If an application is modified or hacked, it will refuse to run and inform the user.

I tested it myself this morning. The current version of ScreenLogic Connect modifies itself, which is a very bad software engineering practice and a very bad security practice. Crossover is a Mac application that lets you run Windows applications on your Mac. Crossover uses the open source 'Wine'. Wine is software that emulates Windows library functions so that Windows applications can be run on Mac and other operating systems. Pentair incorporated Wineskin (the same tools used for Crossover) inside the ScreenLogic Connect app for Mac.

In other words, Pentair wrapped their 3 Megabyte Windows executable inside 190 Megabytes of 'Wineskin'. Sure, you could run the Pentair Windows app under Crossover, but why? (I note that you could also run it under Windows on your Mac using VMware Fusion or Parallels.)I say it is time for Pentair to invest in a true Mac-native (Cocoa) version of ScreenLogic Connect that Pentair's customers can download from the App Store. I have no idea the proportion of Pentair's customers who run Macs, but I suspect that there is a much higher ratio of Mac users among Pentair's customers compared with the overall population.

The software seemed to have regressed between the beta and the 'El Capitan compatible' release a few days ago.I just pulled it down (via edit) because it occurred to me that the beta may be on a separate development path for a future release not yet visible to us, and this recent update is a patch to get the product running on El Capitan.- Note that the new release looks like it wants to be installed in an Applications directory in the user account home folder (/Applications), not the main /Applications folder on the Mac. I recommend that you create a folder named 'Applications' in your user account home folder at the same level as your Desktop, Documents, Downloads, etc. Put the new ScreenLogic Connect app there and run it from there, not the main /Applications folder. Doing so may help you avoid some issues, including the crashing bug that A Bracken noted.Be aware that this new version of ScreenLogic Connect has the same version number as the old one from 2014, which may be confusing if you examine it with Get Info.

However, I wanted to point out a bug I found on the configuration section. On page (3 of 5) - Configure Other Equipment, there is a panel titled Pool/Spa. On Windows it correctly displays options for 'Pump on during heater cooldown', etc. On El Capitan, this panel is empty. If you mouse over the panel and click, it will partially display, but you might uncheck/check options by mistake.
